Yes, casting muffle works very well! I usually mine/ buy iron ore, then cast transmute until the iron is turned into gold (this levels the alteration skill a bit). Then I use the gold ore to craft golden jewelry (this levels the smithing skill) and then I enchant the jewelry (this levels enchanting) and sell it.
