It's very easy to grind game with ranger since long time with blood rites, good statues, drinks and attune mobs and bosses with book and monster. With lucky hat and staff of volatiles casts of course. I have only around 69 blood rites. Less than friends. But I continue to grind game around ng670. Not hard and legit. I played few runs with friends.

For a level 1 Treasury, you will reach 50% tax at 10K gold. Level 2 Treasury = 50% tax at 15K gold. Level 3 Treasury = 50% tax at 20K gold. Level 4 Treasury = 50% tax at 25K gold. Level 5 Treasury = 50% tax at 30K gold. To get the most out of reduced tax it's best to buy ore and use all your gold before you turn in at an elevator.
So, if you have 0 gold in town, tax is 0%. If you have 5000 gold in town, the tax might be like 40%, more or less depending on your town upgrades. This is just my impression. Keep your money only if you want the church upgrades. I believe it is based on how much money your town currently has.

You don't really have to grind, you just have to know how to spend your resources. If able, join some multiplayer lobbies and utilize their town areas, while saving your gold/ore. Always get shaftlocke pickaxe and alway use the alters that require you to sacrifice a stat (if able) for the chance to get 100% ore pickup.
Of course there is a grind. Building up your town takes a lot of ore, then you'll need gold to buy new stuff, level up to learn new abilities. Eventually you'll be able to upgrade items you can find in the dungeons and even build them in town to take with you. This is a really fun game, but it feels too grindy at the moment, and in my opinion this is exclusively due to the fact that you have permanent character upgrades in town that all cost (insane amounts of) gold. Another problem that ties into this is that doing the portals, which are intended to speed up consequent runs, doesn't reward you any gold or ore, which make them completely pointless ...

It's a challenge mode. Grinding for power defeats the purpose. If you want to grind there are infinite ng levels in normal. Now that you say this I think the best option for tweaking merc mode would be a large gold bonus. Something like 3x in ng0, 4x in ng+1, etc. Alternatively, it'd be really fun if they did something like the old hammerwatch ...
If you haven't, you really shouldit's a bit of a grind, but commit to a single character and get them to the power level where you're reliably making huge gains. At the tier I'm playing, a run is successful if I complete the dragon, win with about 300k gold, and also have anywhere from 150500 ore, depending on imp luck.

Your modifiers are the things that change, so the caveat would be "less skirmishes could lead to less ore and gold modifier items and/or drinks, which have an effect on your final reward total".

And the grind is slooow. A full grind from level 1 to somewhere in the castle leves / third boss, can take one to two hours. And the loot may be something like 2030 ore and 67k gold. The ore isn't even enough for a single upgrade and the gold barely covers a single upgrade at the blacksmith.
